The North Face Apex Cottonwood jacket is part of their newly launched 485 line, meant to appeal to the city people who live in cold weather but don't want to sacrifice style. The Apex Cottonwood has been seen as a flagship product, as it has been representing the face of the entire 485 line.

The style was inspired by the traditional trench coat with the hem falling below the waist, covering the hips and back.

- Outer: Nylon, Apex Climateblock with DWR - windproof and waterproof with good breathability and wind permeability rated at 0 CFM (cubic feet per minute)
- Insulation: PrimaLoft One - a material similar to down, which was first designed by the U.S. military and provides insulation even when wet
- Taffeta and tricot neck lining - a non-elastic fabric that maintains shape over years
- Interior lining - nylon
- Fleece-lined interior pockets and chest pockets
