Singelringen

$59.00 Released April, 2005

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Celebrate being single. Unique design (sterling silver base /w a shiny turquoise acrylic outer shell). Communicate to others that you are single.

The Cons:Somewhat annoying elitist cult. Only singles can wear it (sorry couples).

As a revolt against our society's sometimes annoying obsession with coupledom, Singelringen is a celebration of being single. A ring that is purchased by yourself and worn by yourself, to declare that you are single and proud.

Product Shot 2 The idea was conceived by Johan Wahlbäck, a Swedish entrepreneur who recognized that although engaged and married people had a way of announcing their status to the world, no such option was available for singles. Since Johan found himself single and enjoying his life, he too wanted a ring to display his relationship status.

The Singelringen was first introduced in Sweden in April 2005 and has since spread to over 20 countries and has become a cult favorite among celebrities. Japan and Brazil have proven to be especially enamoured with the ring. The ring itself is a simple unisex design of sterling silver as a base, which is then layered with a shiny turquoise acrylic. Each ring's interior features a "Made in Sweden" engraving as well as a unique registration number, which you can register to your name on their website where they've formed a community of fellow Singelringens.

GT-D: #singelringen yeah, I saw interviews with people about it on the news at some point when it was covered...

They said its not that they're saying that they intend to be single forever, but that they don't feel bound to having to have a relationship with someone. While they are single they are quite happy being single...

I'd imagine there are people that wear it that prefer to be single as well though. Feb 28, 08

Amanie: #singelringen I think the point is that you don't wear it *hoping* one day you'll be able to hand it in. If you're into this phenomenon then you're proud to be single and well, if you end up as a couple, you were still single at one point. Aug 8, 07

sharonna: #singelringen i can see how the unique registration number creates a type of singledom unity (and not to get into the "one ring to bind them all" rhetoric), but what happens when you're not single anymore? should you give it back and revoke your registration? wouldn't it be great if the rings were recycled so singles know that one day they too have a chance to return it? Amanie: #singelringen I agree with GT-D. It would be interesting if it took off, but otherwise a fad isn't really saying much. The ring is nice at least so even if it's just a fad it's not an ugly one. Jul 9, 07

GT-D: #singelringen lol - I heard about this awhile back and think it's kinda silly. It's rather hard to just start a new tradition like that. I rad an article about it where a woman who got one found that people think that it means you don't want a relationship at all, which isn't the point of the ring. Otherwise many people don't even know what it is. Seems like another 'pet rock' type of product thats going to make the inventor really rich in a short time then totally disappear. Then people will look back and thing "wasn't that ridiculous? Wish I had thought of it and made all that money." - be kinda cool if it somehow does achieve a more permanent cultural status though, and probably be quite an interesting phenomenon to study. Erik: #singelringen Gotta love the Swedes and their naming conventions. Very literal. I'm surprised they didn't name it "Singleringendatuwerondafingertushoyuarsingel" Jul 4, 07

Amanie: #singelringen If I were single I'd totally be into this ring, a pretty cool concept, I'd say. Jul 4, 07
